OBAN WEEKEND - A Huge Success !!
The SAYFC Competitions Weekend held in Oban over 25-26th February 2006 proved to be very successful and well attended with over 500 YF members attending. A variety of competitions and activities were held over the weekend including Member of the Year, Five-Aside Football, Ten-Pin Bowling, Quiz and Senior Speechmaking. In addition the Member of the Year Dance held in the Corran Halls was sold out as members came to support the weekend.
MEMBER OF THE YEAR 2006
This event took place on Saturday 25th February 2006 at the Corran Halls with one member from each of our Districts being invited to compete in the final. The competition judges, all who have all had close connections with the Association at some point in their life, were:
Out of the 9 members being interviewed it was East Kilbride YFC Member and current Stockman of the Year, William Boyd who was announced as Member of the Year 2006 with Miss Emma Fotheringham of Kinross JAC in second place, Miss Katie Barr of Kilmaurs YFC in third and Mr John Ritchie of Strathearn JAC.
William who has been a member of East Kilbride YFCfor the past 9 years, will be given the opportunity to represent the SAYFC on many occasions both formally and informally throughout her year. He will act as an Ambassador for the Association at events such as the Royal Highland Show, Winter Fair and other National competitions. During his time in Young Farmers, he has held several positions within his Club and has been a keen competitor culminating in winning Stockman of the Year 2006. William works on the family farm.

TEN PIN BOWLING 2006
The Ten-Pin-Bowling Competition was held at the Harbourside Bowl in Oban on Saturday 25th February. There was a great participation with 25 teams registered to take part when each team plays two games in which the top eight were counted. As ever there was Strong competition from many of the Districts - many of which practise vigorously in the time leading up to the National Final. However, on the day, the better team came from Lanarkshire, namely Carluke YFC with Team members Robert Linton, Elizabeth Mackie, Russell Allison, John McGregor, Ian Struthers, and John Struthers. In second place were the Ayrshire team of Kilmaurs YFC with their team and in third place were Turriff YFC

FIVE ASIDE FOOTBALL 2006
The 2006 National five-a-side Football competition was held on Saturday 25th February 206 at the Atlantis Sports Centre, Oban. 14 teams registered to take part in the competition along with a guest team from the newly formed Club of North Argyll.
In first place were a team from the North Region Halkirk YFC from Caithness District. Their team members Jamie Riddell, Andrew Gunn, Graeme Gunn, Martin Cook, Roddy Gray, Alan Rutherford, Bryan Sinclair and Wiliam Budge fought hard to take first place and the trophy for this competition. Runners up in the competition were Thornhill YFC and Mauchline YFC were placed in third place.

SENIOR SPEECHMAKING 2006
After a 2nd place in 2005, Mauchline YFC this year took the RHASS Challenge Cup at the National Finals of Senior Speechmaking with team members Chairman Diane Hunter and Panel Members Jennifer Borthwick, Christine Kerr and Joanne Gemmell. The competition was held at the Corran Halls on Sunday 26th February 2006. In second place were Crossroads YFC and in 3rd place were Kilmaurs YFC.
This was a challenging competition where all team members, consisting of a Chairman and 3 Panel members are all mixed with other teams to create platform teams. The Chairman takes control and introduces both his panel and then selects a variety of questions to be posed to his platform panel.
The questions are not known by the Panel members until the team appear on stage although the Chairman is given 15 minutes to prepare his introductions and a further 15 minutes to chose a selection of questions from a prepared list. The Best Chairman out with the winning team was Louise Millar of Kilmaurs YFC team with Best Panel member being awarded to Raymond Crerar of Crossroads YFC.

NATIONAL QUIZ 2006
The final of the National Quiz was also held in conjunction with the Senior Speechmaking Competition. The top team from each of the 3 Regions attacked individual and team questions covering general knowledge, music, sport and agriculture amongst others. West Renfrewshire YFC were triumphant with their team of Kirsty Howatson, Neil Ritchie, Helen Gilchrist and Hazel Ritchie.
