New Qualification - Health and Safety in Agriculture / Horticulture
NPTC, in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has developed new Level 2 and 3 Certificates in Agriculture / Horticulture. These qualifications have recently been accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), and have been endorsed by the National Farmers Union and the Transport and General Workers Union.
Agriculture and horticulture have one of the worst accident and occupational ill-health records of any major employment sector. Casualties include children and other members of the public, as well as agricultural and horticultural workers.
The HSE has identified this sector as a priority area for improvement.
The new qualifications have been developed to help address these issues and create a safer environment in which to live and work within the agricultural and horticultural sectors. They are expected to help:
* reduce the underlying culture of risk taking that exists within agriculture and horticulture
* extend the knowledge, skills and competencies of those working in the industry (at all levels)
* contribute to the development of a properly trained workforce.
These qualifications are relevant to those working in the agricultural and/ or horticultural sector as supervisors, skilled employees, unit managers, union and worker safety representatives or farmers / growers who are self-employed. They are designed to develop knowledge of health & safety requirements in the agricultural and horticultural industries or add to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Training is recommended and can be assessed through an approved training provider. It is not mandatory, however, candidates who feel that they already have the knowledge and skills covered in the unit may be assessed without training.
The Level 2 Certificate is a pre-requisite for anybody wishing to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate.
