Agri Affairs Conference Programme – Pirntaton Farm

Pirntaton Farm

(The Logan Family)

The last ten years have seen some dramatic changes in both systems and mindset at Pirntaton, which is a 630Ha (520ha effective) upland livestock unit, just north of Galashiels in the Borders. Rising from 750 to 1,700 feet above sea level, our family partnership along with one full time employee, a placement student and a bit of seasonal help, now run 1,650 breeding ewes, (made up of 1,500 NZ Romney composites and 150 Texels and Suffolks), 120 suckler cows and 350 red deer hinds.

Our commercial ewes are virtually all lambed outdoors from the end of April.  Cows calve outdoors from mid May and the hinds calve from late May.

Our focus is a forage based system which maximises the use of pasture and home grown forage and one where supply and demand of forage is as closely aligned as possible. Concentrates are now only  used as a targeted supplement for priority groups or in exceptional circumstances.
