Early 2018 saw the introduction of a new competition for SAYFC, and a juniors only quiz was launched due to the increasing popularity of junior competitions.
Following in National footsteps, the East Region of SAYFC held a Junior Quiz for its members aged 14-19 on Wednesday 7th November for the first time. The competition was heating up, with a brilliant five entries representing three districts across the region; Fife and Kinross, Perthshire and Angus Tayside.
Taking place at Airlie Arms Hotel, Kirriemuir, members were registered by East Chairman Michael Rattray with East Vice Chairman, Ewan Smith, hosting the evening and taking on the role of question master. Seven rounds were played, including agriculture, entertainment and a picture round, where members got nostalgic identifying a mixture of old and new games.
Whilst the final results were calculated, competitors were treated to a brief introduction to speechmaking by Adam Christie; a keen speechmaker during his time in Young Farmers! Format, topics, reasons to take part, and real experiences were all discussed in the hope to encourage a few more members to take part in the less popular junior speechmaking competition.
Michael Rattray, East Chairman, commented, “One of my aims is to boost the attendance of junior competitions, and I think it’s a great opportunity try and revitalise the junior speechmaking competition. There are so many benefits of taking part; we just need to get this through to the potential members!”
