Heifers, Halters and Hairdryers

Heifers, Halters and Hairdryers

Members showed off their Dairy Cattle Dressing skills at our National Final on Sunday 2nd November. The competition, which was held at Craig Wilson Ltd, Livestock Auction Mart, Ayr saw 12 pairs of members compete across our Junior and Senior sections for the National title. Each pair had an hour and half to dress a dairy heifer to show-ring standard.

After a morning of washing, clipping and drying, two pairs stood as winners of their sections; In the juniors, it was Jay Adamson and Joanna Dale of Biggar YFC taking top spot, and the senior title went to the Crossroads pair of Jack Cuthbertson and Scott Anderson.

The full results can be found below:

The cattle were- once again- provided by George Borland of Mossbog Farm with the judging carried out by Robert Hunter and Michael Yates. We would like to extend our thanks to all three for their contribution on the day, and in particular to George for his continued support for the competition. Without his contributions through his yearly provision of quality young stock, the competition would not run.

Talking about the worth of the competition judge and previous National Champion Michael Yates said:

“It’s a great learning curve for these members and junior members to get confidence not only to compete but clip their own animals for the major shows. It’s a great stepping stone in building confidence for these events. “

His advice to competitors was to work as a team, make the most of their holders, and to use a good strong hairdryer. His fellow judge Robert Hunter added to this saying:

“Practice does make perfect. If you work hard in your rough clip, your final clip will be much simpler.”

Well done to all the competitors for their efforts on the day. A massive thanks to our judges, cattle provider, our hosts at Craig Wilson Ltd, our competition electrician David Steele and to all our volunteers and stewards.
