Halkirk Young Farmers Talk their way to the top at North Region Junior Speechmaking

On Sunday, 9th November, the North Region Young Farmers held their Junior Speech Making Elimination at the Ross Institute, Halkirk. The event brought together talented young speakers from across the region, showcasing their confidence, communication, and teamwork skills in front of an engaged audience.

Teams from Halkirk YFC and Harray YFC competed in what proved to be a closely contested and high-quality competition. Each team presented their prepared speeches and handled impromptu questions with professionalism and enthusiasm, impressing both judges and spectators alike.

The judging panel for the day comprised Miss Lynn Sinclair, Mr Phillip Coghill, and Mrs Yardi Cumming, whose thoughtful feedback and expertise were greatly appreciated. Mr Bryan Sinclair and Miss Gemma Duguid acted as Question Masters..

The winning team, Halkirk YFC, spoke on โ€œThe Benefits of Social Media,โ€ exploring how online platforms can be a positive force for connection, learning, and community engagement.

Speaking after the event, a North Region Young Farmers spokesperson said:

โ€œItโ€™s fantastic to see our younger members developing their confidence and communication skills through speech making. The quality of discussion and the level of preparation shown by all teams was outstanding โ€” they should be very proud of themselves.โ€

The North Region Young Farmers would like to extend sincere thanks to the judges, question masters, competitors, and supporters for contributing to a successful and enjoyable day. Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and enthusiasm, and best wishes to the winning team as they progress to the National final of the competition in December in Edinburgh.

After much deliberation, the judges announced the following results:

 

First: Halkirk Pink with 76.5 points – L:R Andrew Sinclair, Liam Mackenzie and Caitlin McGuire

Second: Harray Red with 75.8 points L:R Thomas Corrigal, Robbie Leslie (Best Chair out with winning team), Dana Nicolson (Best Vote of thanks out with winning team)

Third: Harray Green with 69 points L:R Lauren Robertson, Keri Ballantyne, Orlagh Sinclair

Best Speaker out with winning team: Gil Lyons – Halkirk Yellow
