Harray Young Farmer Wins National Photography
Cody Chalmers of Harray Young Farmers won the senior section of our National Photography Competition at the Royal Highland Show. She gave her thoughts on her big win:
“It felt really good to come first place, and something I definitely wasnโt expecting! I wasnโt even at the show yet and I got a message asking if I knew I had come first, So It certainly put a smile on my face and gave us a buzz for the first day of the show.”
The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Auction Mart’, inspired by this year’s competition sponsor United Auctions. Cody won with her capture of a mart employee placing a lot sticker on an animal’s back. She shared how she approached this year’s theme and the process of finding the perfect shot:
ย I am fortunate enough to have a good few friends that works at my local auction mart, so I gave them a message asking if I could come and take photos around the back before one of the big sales, and they were happy enough for me to do so. I had a couple ideas in general of what type of photos I wanted to get. I ended up going a bit overboard and I think altogether I took around 200 photos that morning, so trying to pick 3 was the most tricky part of it all.”
Creative competitions like photography allow members to gain skills and hobbies that will last a lifetime. For Cody her photography journey started from a very young age:
“Photography has always been a part of my life. My mum was a portrait and wedding photographer here in Orkney, since before I was born up until I was around 20 years old, so if it wasnโt taking photos, it was editing photos or just speaking about photos sheโs taken, so itโs something Iโve just picked up over time and had a bit of an interest in. There is nothing specific I like taking photos of, until there is a nice sunset in the evening or if the northern lights are out, I am most likely to have a photo of it”
In the junior section, Lexie Wilson of Inverurie won top spot with her Black and white photograph of sheep waiting for sale.
With 85 photo’s submitted across the 2 sections, sponsors United Auction were impressed by the range and creativity of the entries from our members:
“United Auctions were delighted to sponsor this yearโs photography competition at the Royal Highland Show, it was great to see such a variety of photos representing the theme โAuction Martsโ congratulations to the winners!”
