Sun, Sea and Shop Windows

Every Year, our National Arts & Crafts competition forms the centrepiece of our set up at the Royal Highland Show. This competition (sponsored by Dairyflow) brilliantly highlights the creativity, team work and ingenuity of our members and gives them an opportunity to learn and hone skills that will stay with them throughout their lives.

It was a brilliant year for entries and the competitors truly outdid themselves with the variety of talents and skills on display in our temporary YF Marquee. The theme for this year’s senior competition was ‘Shop Window’. Our teams really ran with this, creating an amazing range of storefronts including farm shops, sweet shops, patisseries, book stores, butchers, Christmas shops and even the Harry Potter Store.

The winning display for the seniors came from the team from Mauchline Young Farmers with their wonderfully presented Bridal Shop display. With high quality cakes, arrangements and crafts that wouldn’t look amiss on anyone’s big day. Team member Fiona Gemmell spoke about the time and teamwork that goes into a winning display:

β€œOur team were ecstatic to have gained such an amazing result on Saturday, picking up the trophy out of so MANY talented teams. The standard each year gets better and better which is great to see from all the districts.
After a lot of stress and hard work going into creating each item, the result made it all worth while. This year we had a wide age range in the team from a first time junior competitor to experienced seniors which was great to see everyone get involved and embrace their creative sides. This all wouldn’t have been possible without our fantastic trainers which we are extremely thankful to for their endless support and encouragement.”

This year’s junior section theme was ‘A Day at the Beach’ with members creating a wonderful array of crafts, perfect for a trip to the seaside. The winners in this section were the team of Crossroads who produced a high quality entry throughout to attain an impressive top score of 90.5/100. The team were thrilled to win the competition but were especially pleased at the new skills they have picked up in the process:

“It feels amazing to walk away from both Ayr Show & Highland Show knowing that there was a red ribbon across our Junior Handicrafts display. All four of us who took part in the Junior Handicrafts team have taken it upon ourselves to learn new skills we never thought would be achievable! Our many practices were fun but also challenging at the same time, but later down the line we realised it all paid off in the end! We recommend that any Junior member should consider being in the team as you never know what talents you could bring!”

We would like to thank all the members, trainers and clubs who help these beautiful entries come together, they are always a highlight of the show and are a perfect way to showcase the brilliant array of talents within our membership. Thanks also to the members of the Women’s Institute for judging this year’s competition and to our volunteers and staff who work hard behind the scenes to make it all run smoothly from entry through set up and on to show day. Finally we would like to thank Dairyflow for their continued support of this competition and our membership. Sales Manager Scott Baird was impressed by the standard of entries:

“We were delighted to sponsor the Young Farmers Organisation at the Highland Show again this year. The National Arts & Crafts competition keeps going from strength to strength and the quality of entries were outstanding. Wishing you the best of luck with your Big Build Project, the plans look brilliant!”
