Crossroad’s Aces at The Armadillo

On Saturday 6th April saw the return of the West Region Talent Spot competition. Where Young Farmers take to the stage at the SEC, Glasgow in a battle to be crowned champions.

8 teams competed in a very close Talent Spot competition whilst others clubs put on spectacular front of curtain performances. Which were all introduced by our West Region Chair, Colin McKinnon.

Biggar, Kilmaurs, Stewartry, Lower Nithsdale, Loch Lomond, Crossroads, Lesmahagow and SSS.

Reigning supreme on the night and taking home the Wiseman Crystal Thistle Trophy for the second year in a row with 89 2/3  points was Crossroads YFC with their production of “Sold As Seen, Stormy SW19” produced by David Smith and Fiona Cuthbertson.

Cooking into second place with 85 2/3 points was the team from Lesmahagow YFC with their performance “Its RAW (Talent)” produced by Laura Smith. Taking 3rd place with “Suit Yer Cell” produced by Linda Lupton was SSS YFC with 84 1/3 points.

Neve Crooks from Lesmahagow YFC  received the trophy for Best Individual Act and taking reserve was Louise Veitch from Kilmuars, whilst “Highland Heritage” from Avondale YFC won the audience vote in the Front Of Curtain competition. Annie Bryson, Jane Fleming, Holly Lees, Kirsty Rae, Iona Watson and Sarah Whitelaw had the audience clapping along to their very impressive Gaelic singing!

The opening and closing acts for the evening came from Loudoun Musical Society, Bute JAC, SSS YFC 80th Anniversary Concert Cast and Lesmahagow YFC were last to take to the stage with their performance of “Leave a Light On”. With singers, pipes drums and a dancer they certainly captured the audience whilst waiting on the judges results. This year’s Talent Spot was judged by the more than capable trio of Leigh – Ann Plenderleith, Karen Allison and Sandy Wilkie.

Our thanks must also go the SEC staff, raffle donators, audience, West Region district stewards and all the backstage stewards for their assistance and of course the outstanding acts which entertained.

A huge thank you is also extended to Scotmin Nutrition for supporting the event.

After the event members headed to a sold out post show dance. A big thank you too Iain and all the staff at The Garage nightclub for letting more than 450 young farmers take to their dance floor.

West Region Chair – Colin McKinnon said of the event:

“Talent Spot is the greatest spectacle in the West Calendar and the Westies once again pulled out all the stops. Saturday, was a great showcase of all our member’s (on stage and backstage) of their hard work and talent. With an audience of over 1000 and a sold out dance the members and all four districts really did themselves proud. West Talent Spot 2024 really has been the highlight to finish my year as Regional Chair”
