Q&A

What is your story away from YF?
I grew up on a beef and sheep farm just outside Biggar where I have been involved helping from a young age. As well as helping at home I had a few hobbies growing up, I participated in tap, ballet and jazz dancing, 4 years at girl guiding where I was a leader in my last year, I swam for competitively for Lanark ASC and throughout school I took lessons to play the French horn. I completed my 5th year at high school and then left, with not any idea what I wanted to do. I took a year where I spent my time working first on a robotic jersey farm and then onto a sheep and goat dairy where I am still working alongside studying my HNC in agriculture at the SRUC Edinburgh campus.

Why did you join?
I joined Biggar YF in 2021 after the Covid restrictions had been lifted. My parents had both been in young farmers Dad in Bathgate and Biggar and mum in Lanark and Biggar, so with their encouragement and the many photos I had been shown of how much fun they had I joined. With having older cousins living not far from me who are also members of Biggar YF I managed to get a lift to many events with them, allowing me to meet many friends another reason I was so eager to join.

What have you got out of YF?
Since joining YF my confidence has completely boosted, I’m not afraid to give anything a shot. Within my first year I managed to win the junior points trophy, I have then competed and been successful in many competitions at Lanarkshire, west and national level. My highlights being second in national stock judging as the team event and second and junior national sheep dressing. I have made many friends across all districts from east to west and even some in the north through a recent exchange.

What do you want to get out of YF in the future?
As I continue to progress through YF I hope to have made many life long friends, to have achieved my goal of being secretary and maybe even moving through the ranks and chairing national committees.
